Against a backdrop where our everyday activities are increasingly quantified as metrics, the Gender + Sexuality Data Lab challenges how organisations, companies, governments and institutions use data to classify and control gender, sex, and sexuality.
Our mission can be expressed in a few words:
Equip people to expose the differential impacts of data, AI and other technologies on gender and sexual minorities and empower them to build something better.
The Lab rejects the notion that more data = progress and instead advocates for interventions that develop knowledge and tools to dismantle the cisheteropatriarchal foundations of data collection, analysis and use.
The Lab recognises everyone’s contributions – in particular, the individuals around the world doing the data work – and is a bridge between academic scholarship and its application on the street and in the board room. Our work is accessible, informed by evidence and driven by the desire to not just report on the world but to change it.
