The Gender + Sexuality Data Lab and GENDER.ED are delighted to welcome Dr Jamie Budnick (Assistant Professor, Sociology, Cornell University) to the University of Edinburgh.

The demography of sexuality has become a battleground in debates over LGBTQ civil rights. Experts and activists on all sides turn to demographic knowledge to make claims about LGBTQ people and the worthiness of their political claims, and data collection itself has become a site of intense political contestation. Jamie draws on evidence from three pivotal same-sex marriage cases at the United States Supreme Court on the path to federal marriage equality to analyze the specific ways that population counting and other types of demographic evidence are mobilized in the legal arena.
